Why I set up this index

Tips for searching

You can enter any part of the cemetery name in the search box, as long as it is 3 characters. To make it easier I have used Anglican for Church of England, C/E, CofE, or Anglican, and Catholic for R/C; for Mount or Mt I've used Mount, but for Saint or St, I've used St, except when the word is Saints, such as in All Saints.

The search on this page searches all the entries in my index. To search a particular state, click on the link for that state. The page for each state also includes a list of the websites with data for the cemeteries in that state. This index is a work in progress. I have completed all the states, except I have not yet finished South Australia.

The following sites have not been included in this index:
FamilySearch I recommend searching here first. The Australia Deaths and Burials, 1816-1980 collection includes some cemetery records, such as Barrabool Hills (Highton) in Victoria and Karrakatta in Western Australia, that have more details than can be found in other records online. FamilySearch also has indexes for both:
Find a Grave and

For war deaths
Commonwealth War Graves Commission

For Jewish burials
Australian Jewish Historical Society

A few cemeteries don't have online data, but the records can be found using the ICemetery app for Androids and IPhones. So far the only cemeteries for Australia available on the app are Mona Vale, South Head and Waverley cemeteries, which are all from New South Wales.

If you are unable to find the cemetery you are looking for, or you are unable to find records for the person you're looking for, the Australian Cemeteries website has an alphabetical index of cemeteries in each state, which may provide additional details about where to find information for the cemetery.
The information may be on a subscription site. I have set up a separate page Subscription Sites with details about the collections held on the three main subscription sites.

The websites below are sites that I have indexed that have information from more than two states. They may also have records from overseas.

Main websites

Australian Cemeteries the home page for each state there is a search form; the one for Victoria searches the Australian Cemeteries, OzGenonline, and Carol's Headstone Photographs site; the site also has lists of cemeteries with links to other information, such as contact details for each cemetery and whether there are any transcripts or headstone photos available that aren't online.
Australian Cemeteries Index by person or cemetery; there is also a list of cemeteries for each state, with the address of the cemetery, the number of inscriptions, and whether there are any photos, which can be accessed by choosing Map from the top menu, and then the state
Carol's Headstone Photographs Victoria, but also has data for other states; you can either choose the cemetery from the list of cemeteries, or use the Search form on the home page for each state on the Australian Cemeteries website
ChapelHill Queensland, but has information for other states as well.
Dead Search South Australia, but has other states as well
Genealogical Data
Gravestone Photographic Resources
Lorraine's Cemetery Records Pages Western Australia, but also has data for other states; there is a Search this site on the top menu; or you can browse by state and cemetery
Myrasplace of the entries don't show which state the cemetery is in, just whether in Australia or New Zealand
